Birthday 2010

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

M

y birthday is officially today but the celebration began yesterday because there was just so much I wanted to do.

The day began with my finishing the prep work for painting upstairs in the barn.  I’m going to paint the rafters, roof deck and end walls white just to brighten things up a bit.

I also spent some time having some fun making a self portrait.  I got the roller work done on the roof deck and I was satisfied with that for the day.  As I was cleaning up the roller and paint bucket it began to pour and I got completely soaked.  It was nice because it was one of those times when you get so drenched you just don’t care.

After lunch I made myself a birthday cake.  I used Betty Crocker Super Moist Devil’s Food mix for the cake but, I made the chocolate filling and white icing from scratch using this recipe.  I’ve never split cake layers before so that was fun.  I inserted 8 toothpicks around the layer then rested dental floss on the toothpicks.  When I pulled the floss tight it split the layer quite nicely. Thank you, Wiki-How.  Once the cake was done Lynda and I sat together in the living room and enjoyed a couple of glasses of a nice Chateauneuf du Pape while watching the rain.  Then it was time to cook dinner.

I broiled lobster tails for the first time ever.  Splitting the shell and pulling up the meat was a lot easier than I expected.  Thank you, E-How.  I’ve never before gone to the trouble of clarifying butter before so that was a new experience as well.  The pretty little side presentation in the photo is a teepee made from a hash brown patty housing sautéed Brussels sprouts with Roma tomato and baby spinach leaves.  I really enjoy presentation.

The champagne was 2006 Raventós I Blanc.  Very nice!

We sat in the living room and talked some more while finishing up the champagne.

Lynda was SO nice to do the kitchen cleanup.  That is something I rarely ask of her since it is I who made the mess but, it’s muh birthday!  We then went upstairs and watched the Daily Show and Futurama which I missed most of because I fell asleep in my chair.

We were awakened at 1 AM this morning by headlights in the driveway. This rarely happens and is never a good thing. While I was fumbling to get dressed and go investigate one of the two or three cars in the drive backed up to turn around. I could then see that it was a city police car so, yay. I turned on the outside light and went outside just as it started to rain a bit. The cop turned his spotlight on me as I approached. I knew I was innocent of whatever so I was ok with it all.
It turned out that they had received a 911 hang-up from our address. In retrospect I wish I had asked what address that was because people frequently get that wrong. What disturbed me was that the cop said he had knocked on the door several times. I never heard it. Yikes. And why wasn’t he suspicious enough to think I might be a clever criminal. Don’t answer that.
At 4 AM I was awakened again by something chewing on the house. I don’t know what it was but I got up. I’ll have a nap later.

I just finished a 20 hour series of advanced Photoshop tutorialscert_banner at Lynda.com . If you are serious about wanting to learn a software application I highly recommend checking out what is available.  There was so much information in this series I’m sure I’ll watch a great deal of it again but there are more Photoshop tutorials available which I have yet to see. Onward!

With an unwanted off day Friday because thunderstorms prevented their scheduled landing, the astronauts intended to pass the time by watching movies they brought on the mission.

But when they tried to play them, they found out that their laptops didn’t have the proper software.

UU09

Saturday was the reception in Fairhope for the Unitarian Fellowship show featuring artwork by Lynda and photographer Rita Skiadas.

Attendance was good.  Music was provided by Pinky Bass playing cello in a quartet.

One nice surprise was my sister, Anne and her husband, George showing up.  Even though they live just a short distance away, we seldom see each other.  They were escaping from their house which was a mess due to an upstairs plumbing leak.

UU09

We saw a lot of friends there as well, some who we haven’t seen in quite a while.

After the reception we had an excellent sushi dinner with Donan and Nancy.

Florida St. to Reopen Friday

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

MOBILE, Ala. – City officials said Florida Street will fully reopen Friday after a more than 1½-year-long drainage project that forced lane closures and prompted a class-action lawsuit by business owners along that stretch.

The Florida Street project entailed replacing drainage pipe with a large culvert that goes downhill from railroad tracks south of Dauphin Street to Woodcock Creek. Workers are just finishing the second phase, which had closed most of the lanes from the railroad line to Emogene Street.

Work began on the project in the summer of 2007.
Florida Street has long been one of the major business corridors in midtown Mobile, with stores selling everything from beads and candy to groceries and furniture.
Ten business owners along the corridor sued the city and Volkert & Associates engineering firm in February 2008, alleging that the project was taking too long, damaging property and isolating the stores from customers.

Several other businesses have since joined the lawsuit, and the plaintiffs added the construction company to the list of defendants.

City spokeswoman Barbara Drummond said the street will likely have to be closed again in the future. The city has requested a permit from the railroad company to install the culvert underneath the train tracks. A timetable for that phase of the project has not been determined.
